What is Reiki and How Can It Help You?

Many of my clients who have received Reiki say "I don't know how it works but I know it helps!"

If you have ever felt that way, you're not alone.

Reiki can be difficult to describe because there is no physical manipulation of the body like massage, and no talk therapy like psychology. Yet, healing of the physical, mental, emotional and energetic body are all known experiences.

To Heal: to make whole, sound, and well.

So, what is happening during Reiki?

At it's core, Reiki creates conditions for the body's own innate, natural healing systems to be activated, allowing for repair and restoration.

You may view this through the lens of the Autonomic Nervous System. External stressors in the physical world keep the body on high alert and direct energy and blood flow toward organs and systems needed for immediate survival.

While this is a necessary adaptive response for immediate danger, many of us have lives of pressures and stressors that keep this response chronically switched on: workplace demands, schedule and time constraints, financial troubles, family conflicts, global issues, even navigating the daily traffic keeps us heightened.

When the body remains in this heightened state, resources are diverted away from processes such as digestion, immune function, tissue repair, and hormonal balance.

Over time, this can contribute to fatigue, tension, poor sleep, emotional reactivity, and a general sense of disconnection.

Reiki gently supports a shift out of this stress response.

The nervous system is invited into the Parasympathetic state — often called “rest and repair.”

In this state:

  • Breathing slows and deepens

  • Heart rate steadies, blood pressure is invited to lower

  • Muscles and tissues soften

  • Digestion and immune systems have space to function

  • The mind becomes quieter

  • The body can allocate energy toward healing and restoration

This is not something the practitioner “does” to you. Rather, it is something your own body allows when it feels safe enough to do so.

At its heart, Reiki is a gentle practice that creates the conditions for wholeness.

The human body is deeply intelligent and wants homeostasis; it wants balance and wholeness- we just have to create conditions in this modern world to allow it!

Shanti Sanctuary in Brisbane honours the body's own healing mechanisms through the practices of Yoga and Reiki- supporting nervous system regulation, deep rest, body awareness, and a return to balance.

If you are curious, the most meaningful way to understand Reiki is to experience it for yourself and notice what shifts 💜

If you are new to Reiki, I would recommend the 60 minute appointment to allow for the full experience and optimal rest and rest and relaxation.
