Yoga is an Ancient practice originating from Northern India, dating back 5,000 years ago!
The first written recording of yoga is detailed in the Rig Veda- an ancient document written in Sanskrit that outlines yoga's purpose of uniting the Individual to their mind, body, nature, and greater Universe.
Yoga = "to yoke/unite"
The ancient practitioners of yoga took inspiration from the natural world and the Gods and Goddesses of Hinduism to form the asanas-postures. For example: Mountain, Cobra, Dolphin, Warrior poses, etc.

The asanas are seen as a way to physically relax the body and prepare for stillness/meditation, with the ultimate goal of achieving samadhi- Oneness.
As you can imagine, the process of achieving Oneness does not happen overnight....if ever! But, it is the continual practice of yoga, the discovery of self, and the development of a mind-body awareness that helps us humans cultivate a sense of peace and connection.
